Pregnancy

Chiropractic care is the drug-free noninvasive practice of correcting spinal misalignments to alleviate pain, restore mobility, and promote healthy bodily function. For most pregnant women, back pain is part of the process of growing an additional tiny person. A woman's body goes through an amazing physical and physiological change during pregnancy. Typical weight gain during pregnancy is between 25 and 35 pounds which can cause additional load or stress on the spinal column and pelvis. When dysfunction exists, it commonly presents as pain or discomfort. Muscular dysfunction is also a common occurrence during the later stages of pregnancy. Rapid weight gain during pregnancy causes a tremendous increase in physical demand on the lumbar spine and pelvic musculature. When the musculature is unable to keep up with the physical demand, it commonly increases its muscular tone. In its early stages, this is commonly noticed as tightness or restriction of motion. In more severe cases this is noticed as pain. Studies have also shown a 3 times greater risk of experiencing labor pain if back pain is experienced during pregnancy. These problems may also cause pain and increased difficulties during delivery. Fortunately, relief may be just a chiropractic visit away.

Chiropractic care generally is not recommended if you are experiencing the following:

  • Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy
  • Placenta previa or placenta abruption
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Moderate to severe toxemia

Our office has specific adjusting tables in order to accommodate a pregnant woman's growing belly. Treatment is also customized to avoid pressure on the abdomen. Common treatments for women during pregnancy are chiropractic manipulation to restore normal mechanical function, massage to decrease muscle hypertonicity/spasm, and therapeutic exercise to strengthen and stabilize areas of weakness. Reports have shown that 75-84% of women receiving chiropractic treatment during pregnancy have received reduction in symptoms. Call our office and schedule an appointment with one of our experience doctors to see if chiropractic care is right for you.
